Rules of New Consumer Protection Act

The central government last week approved new rules relating to e-commerce under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The new rules will also apply to e-commerce sites such as Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal. The law makes a number of stringent provisions for e-commerce sites. The law provides for life imprisonment for sellers of counterfeit and adulterated goods. So let's find out how these new rules will change your e-shopping.

  • The central government last week approved the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The new law will now replace the Consumer Protection Act of 1986. The new law has been in force since July 20.
  • The law was enacted in August last year. But it could not be enforced due to various rules. The new law contains a number of provisions that determine the liability of e-commerce companies.
  • No decision has been taken so far on sections 10 to 27 of Chapter Three of the new law which has been enacted under the name Consumer Protection Act 2019.
  • The time limit for appeal against the decision of the district commission has been extended from 30 days to 45 days. Now the district, state and national commissions can also review their own decisions.
  • The new law has made the consumer more capable and powerful. If the district and state commission rules in favor of the consumer, it will not appeal to the national commission.
  • Now a public interest application can also be filed in the Consumer Forum. The responsibilities of e-commerce, online, direct selling and teleshopping companies have been determined.
